Iran announced last month that it planned to triple its military budget by 2025, a significant increase of over 200%. Around the same time, draft budget documents indicated that Russia is hiking national defense spending by a quarter in 2025.
While one of these countries has been in active conflict with Ukraine since 2022, the other is engaged in a shadowy war with Israel. Records show that global military expenditure reached a record high of $2.44 trillion in 2023. The 6.8% increase between 2022 and 2023 also marked the first time a rise in military spending was recorded in all five geographical regions: Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, and the Americas, in a global economy set for its weakest half-decade performance in 30 years.
Amid a growing global economic crisis eroding savings and inflicting a huge blow on the cost of living, one would think economic revival should be a priority. However, governments have clearly shown their priorities—military strength.
As tensions rise and echoes of war reverberate globally, even a pacifist nation like India, whose defense budget has risen by 44% since 2014, is not left out. India is increasing its military spending in response to its regional rivals, China and Pakistan.
But why is the global cry of hunger overlooked for arms proliferation?
To autocratic governments, preparing to quell possible mass anger fueled by excruciating economic pains is seen as a proactive measure, a quicker fix than economic solutions. Full-blown internal conflict is the major risk in this case.
Some leaders might think that food can wait a minute as they build up a strong military to fight for the better collective interests of the citizens. In this case, the citizens must be carried along and assured that the hardship is only temporary. A strong military can protect economic interests at home and overseas.
Evidently, all indices point towards an unstable, uncertain, and anxious future. Some practical leaders might be insinuating, “Hey, why can’t we let them know the party years are over and prepare for what the future truly holds?” In this case, the government deliberately allows the citizens to face economic survival battles.
However a government approaches the current global crisis, the systematic alienation of citizens is growing wider. Around the world, citizens appear more detached and disconnected from the flurry of government decisions. This is where mass unrest is incubated. The next few years shall witness sweeping changes.
No matter how much it hurts, the citizens must understand that the party years are truly over and judiciously prepare for what lies ahead.
